What pigments will swell in pigment printing paste?
Pigment printing paste is a mixed material composed of water, pigment and dispersant. The container is not completely sealed or not packed in barrels, and some solvents play a role in the storage process, so that the slurry can be concentrated and thickened, and oxygen in the air can also promote gelation. In the process of storage of environmental protection coatings, the storage temperature is too high and the storage time is too long, which will also cause gelatinization of coatings.
The coating looks thick, but once it is mechanically stirred, it can flow freely, and after stopping stirring, it can restore the original phenomenon. The paint is too thick to stir. The phenomenon that gelled coatings change from liquid to unusable solid or semi-solid state. Because the fine particles of pigment form lumps and jelly, it is called false thickening or thixotropy.
The main reason for the thickening of paint paste is that the pigment used reacts with the binder resin. For example, paint with high acid value and basic pigment react saponifiedly during storage, attracting and neutralizing each other, causing gelation and solidification. It is mainly presented in coatings with high pigment content, and talcum powder, zinc oxide, lithopone and red lead powder are the most obvious.

In order to prevent thickening and swelling, the main improvement ways are as follows:
① Adjust and control the polarity of particle surface.
The storage stability of water-based color paste rises, mainly due to the poor matching or compatibility between the particle surface polarity of organic pigment and the polarity of dispersion medium. If the pigment is treated with oleophilic rosin resin, especially when the dosage is high, the particle surface polarity decreases, and it is easier to separate from the dispersion medium when it is used for coloring paint color paste, and it shows the phenomenon of rising. That is, the pigment particles aggregate with each other, and the colorant is separated and precipitated from the dispersion medium.
② Adjust the molecular weight of dispersant.
Additives are added in the manufacturing process of paint paste to improve the stability of dispersant. The selection of additives should pay attention to the molecular weight of additives. Additives with higher molecular weight, especially those with longer fatty chains and branched chains, can help prevent pigment particles from gathering according to their steric hindrance principle.
③ Treating pigments with surfactants with strong hydrophilicity or high HLB value can improve the dispersion stability in aqueous media, or coating pigments with hydrophilic acrylic monomers can prevent swelling.
In addition, when the water quality or pigment PH value is acidic, it is easy to produce bacteria 2, which also causes coagulation and precipitation, and when it is serious, it will agglomerate and swell.
